Why This Must Be Read:

Back before S4 and Outcast, John's family was a mystery, and authors had fun imagining what it was like growing up Sheppard. This is one of my favorite 'meet John's parent(s)' stories because it includes a nice helping of 'gee, our fake relationship is actually real.'

Excerpt:

Rodney couldn't say that he was surprised exactly, when he showed up unexpectedly on Sheppard's doorstep and found his reception less than enthusiastic. Still, it kind of hurt to see that look of resigned annoyance in Sheppard's eyes. Rodney would like to consider them friends at least, and every once in a while he actually let himself believe that they were.

Then Sheppard would draw back into himself and make Rodney feel like a complete and total heel again, and they'd be back to distant acquaintances. Like now, for example.

“Am I interrupting anything?” Rodney asked, trying for snide, but probably sounding somewhat wary.

“Maybe,” Sheppard drawled, leaning against his open door.

“Oh, um,” Rodney resisted the urge to scuff his foot against the step like a child.

Sheppard sighed and stood up straight, holding the door open for Rodney. “You want a beer, McKay?”

Rodney brightened almost immediately, but tried not to show it. “Yeah, that sounds great.”

Rodney was lounging in Sheppard's kitchen, waiting for the man to dig a couple beers out of his fridge, when the doorbell rang.

“God, I never should have told anybody my address,” Sheppard grouched from where he was fighting with the cardboard box in the fridge that was currently holding their beer captive. The doorbell rang again, twice this time. “McKay, make yourself useful and get that for me, would you?”

Rodney grumbled about being treated like the damn butler as he stomped down the hallway. On second thought, maybe he should have just waited in the parking lot outside the complex for a couple hours until it had been safe to go back into the labs.

Rodney opened the door, still scowling heavily, and found himself face-to-face with a man he didn’t know. The stranger was older, with salt-and-pepper black hair, a rather intimidating nose, and ears that Rodney found vaguely familiar. He was wearing a nice suit and tie, and carrying an old duffel bag over his shoulder. Rodney eyed him suspiciously. “What?”

“Sorry,” the stranger nodded at him, “I think I must have got the wrong address.”

Rodney waved a hand at him in dismissal. “No, no, it's probably right, this isn't my house. Sheppard!” Rodney bellowed across the house, “It's for you!”

“Jesus, McKay,” Sheppard said as he came around the corner from the kitchen, rubbing at his ears, “Of course it's for me, it's my damn house. But now that you've informed the neighborhood...” Sheppard stopped mid-sentence as he finally got a look at the man standing in his doorway.

Rodney looked back and forth between Sheppard and the man on the doorstep. A slow sinking feeling started in the pit of his stomach as he began to realize why the ears had seemed familiar. And the hair, now that he thought about it.

“Dad,” Sheppard bit out, “Well, I can't say I saw this coming.”
