Why This Must Be Read: The summary says: “Do you have something to hide, Mr. Sheppard?” McKay asked gravely, eyes drifting to look down the hallway at the closed doors. He was probably imagining bright, flashing neon signs proclaiming John’s status as a tax evader; long manifestos tacked to the walls outlining the downfall of the IRS and modern society, and fat stacks of cash spilling from overstuffed mattresses

Rodney McKay is an IRS Auditor who has to audit John’s taxes. John Sheppard is an actor has a parasitic ex-wife who is driving him crazy and two good friends down at the local restaurant. He tries to befriend Rodney but Rodney is too by the book no matter how much he wants to be friends with John

Flopping down on the couch, he decided to aim somewhere between desperate and special. Casual, maybe.

He flicked on the TV, groaning as he flashed past his face on every second entertainment channel, and a few that weren’t. His clicks got more desperate as he tried to find something that wasn’t him or a Golden Girls repeat.

ESPN saved him from attempting to slit his wrists with the remote. A college football replay switched to mute gave him something to focus on while he sorted through the final pile.

There were a couple of invitations to restaurant, art gallery, and envelope openings, a politely worded letter from an independent film producer asking him to audition (it looked interesting, the guy had balls sneaking into the building to deliver it, he kept it for consideration), and a registered envelope signed for by the doorman.

It didn’t seem particularly interesting, not heavy, no return address, probably another threat from Chaya’s lawyers. Wearily, he opened it and flicked open the letter, his stomach plummeting as he saw the letterhead.

“You’ve got to be fucking me.”

United States Department of the Treasury. Internal Revenue Service. Audit. 30 days to respond or the IRS will automatically adjust your tax liability.

Fuck.

Chaya wasn’t just happy dragging his name through the mud; she wanted his soul as well.

Scrunching the letter into a ball, he shoved it in his pocket and hauled himself to his feet, determined not to let his ex-wife’s petty mind games get to him. He grabbed his keys, phone, iPod and wallet and hotfooted it out of there.
