Why This Must Be Read: Written by a fellow Aussie, this fic explores the alternate universe proposed in the season 1 episode 'There But for the Grace of God.' There's a strong focus on the developing romantic relationship between Jack and Sam, but it also touches on the unusual pairing of Janet and Kawalsky. The fic flirts with a few other first season episodes including 'Children of the Gods' and 'The Broca Divide.' I hate to play favourites, but this fic stands out for me - I've read it two or three times. I think the story and characters are well developed and executed. Without spoiling the ending for those who haven't read it, there's two choices depending on your personal preferences. If you're a Jack/Sam shipper (or just a connoisseur of good fanfiction), this one will hit the right buttons - just keep a box of tissues handy, because it's heavy on the angst! The author also weaves in a few new characters, including the loveable Leslie, who fit perfectly into the universe.

In a way, 'Meet you on the Other Side' has elements of the 'Pride and Prejudice' about it (particularly in the first few chapters), but I choose to view the "borrowing" of familiar themes endearing - and I hope you do too! Happy reading!

Why This Must Be Read: Walter perspective is such a rare treat! Here is Walter the Chevron Guy, watching the Quantum Mirror rather than the Stargate, and... waiting. His thoughts on various team members, and how Hammond interacts with all them, is fantastic.

This is sad and somber and somehow lonely, but that element of stubborn hope leaves you believing that there just might be a happy ending after all.

Why This Must Be Read: On the surface, this seems at first glance to be a fairly straightforward 'mission gone wrong' story, but read on, and that perception turns sideways and upside down more than once as the plot unfolds. This is an artfully constructed story, beautifully written and highly entertaining. In particular, the aliens are an amazing creation and the black humour is especially well delivered ... but really, I absolutely love the entire thing, start to finish!

Why This Must Be Read: Back in the day, this story was (and still is, imo) a 'must read' work in the hurt/comfort genre. While the 'hurt' part may not be everyone's cup of tea, a well-done hurt/comfort story serves to highlight deep bonds of loyalty and friendship ... and where that's concerned, this story is one of the best. All the characters play important roles, plus, for me, the commitment, caring, and commonality of purpose amongst SG-1 more than offsets scenes of violence. I also like the point-of-view choice the author made; imo the alternating sections of 3rd and 1st person pov are highly effective. Overall, this story is well-plotted, well written, and just a plain old really good read!

Why This Must Be Read: This story was written back toward the beginning of it all, and is one of the very first on-world action/adventure stories I encountered, way back then, in which a Goa'uld threat is found on Earth ... and in fact this one is the very first story I ever read that used the premise and setting of an archaeological dig site as being the source of that threat. All these years later, I still remember how new to me the concept was (at that time), and how much I enjoyed it. Having re-read it recently and discovering that I still like it every bit as much as before (especially the bit with the rings), I decided to rec it here, in case some of you out there have never heard of or read some of the golden-oldies such as this. I hope you like it.

Why This Must Be Read: The summary of this is "five times Daniel sat alone in a dark room," but in reality, it's "five times Daniel tried to sit alone in a dark room, until someone rescued him." I love how the choice of each person so fits the situation. A very warming read.

Why This Must Be Read: This is an excellent tag for the season one episode "Cor-Ai," which in my opinion is better than the episode itself. While I can see what the episode was trying to do, I felt like Teal'c's own voice and perspective were rejected to an uncomfortable degree. That is not the case in this fic, in which Teal'c and General Hammond reflect on issues of guilt and mercy, and Teal'c perhaps emerges with a new perspective on the events of the episode. Highly recommended!

snippet of fic:

"Looks like I'm the one disturbing you here," George said, taking a few steps closer. Teal'c had washed off the Byrsa body paint and changed into a fresh uniform, but he still had the same pensive expression he'd worn when SG-1 returned from Cartago. The same expression as when he had unflinchingly described the Cor-Ai and its outcome. For all George knew, it was the same expression Teal'c had worn when Jack had informed him that no reinforcements from Earth were on their way to save him.

It would be lying to say George wasn't relieved to see Teal'c come through the 'gate alive and in one piece, but that wasn't nearly the end of it. There was still an elephant in the living room and it looked like he wasn't getting home without addressing it.

Why This Must Be Read: OK so these are three more longfics, making up the "Tatters" series by Martha. It's Martha, so you know it's going to be good, and these are complex, detailed, plotty and dramatic, with barrels of angst, near-death experiences (well, Daniel's involved after all), and great characterizations. I found the whole series gripping, but be aware that the first story is pure Sentinel, then the next two incorporate a lot of Daniel - and Jack, plus other SG1 favourites, and there's a tiny bit of Angel at the very end of the third story. Gripping reads, all of them, and the Cthulhu aspect in this is one of the creepiest takes on the mythos of any of these crossovers. Strongly recommended if you like these fandoms (especially TS and SG1) - very well written and excellent, long, engaging reads.

Why This Must Be Read:

Sorry, another painful fic. In less than 3800 words, Otter paints a picture of what-could-have been in a mission-gone-wrong.

The story starts with Daniel doing his thing on what Jack would call "another dry, dusty planet -- and why are we here anyway?" But there's another team in charge and we don't know where the rest of SG-1 is.

And Daniel's not doing well, in spite of Jack's support. So they go back to Earth and Daniel -- to Jack's dismay -- says he's not ready to be in the field.

A dream that night revisits what happened...

Which makes the ending even more devastating.

Why this must be read: Because it takes the fandom's favourite Daniel fanon (which I am fond of too!) and sends it up ruthlessly. Hammond's world-weariness and Jack's pissiness (and Teal'c's! I love Teal'c's blink and you miss it part in this) are fabulous but best of all if Daniel's phlegmatic acceptance of his role as Intergalactic Sex Object, mixed with a unstoppable and adorably Daniel fascination for all the social and academic inferences of, well, his role as Intergalactic Sex Object...

"Where is Dr Jackson?"

"The locals wouldn't let us leave unless Daniel stayed behind as their Warlord's sex-slave."

Hammond could feel his blood pressure rising. "Tell me you're kidding, Jack."

"I'm not kidding."

"That's the third time this month!"

"Fourth, sir," Major Carter corrected stepping out from behind her team leader...

...who snorted. "Come on Carter, you can't count PC7 23R; that was more of a Daniel gets taken over by alien mind control situation."

This is in many ways the usual "oh no an alien tech disaster we must apply science" SG1 scenario, but Daniel rapidly adapts to his appendages and soon takes them for granted, and, as you'd expect, when things get slashy they're a lot of fun for both him and Jack. Why This Must Be Read:
Author's Summary: A few weeks before Christmas, a member of SG-1 is critically injured -- off duty and right here on Earth -- but the event brings everyone together as they were meant to be....

This story takes place during that odd gray area between seasons 8 and 9 when all of SG-1 leaves the SGC except for Daniel, but before Cameron Mitchell shows up to resurrect the team (or something). It features trouble-magnet Daniel, who never fails to be one of my favourite troupes. And, yes, it has a first-time, getting together Jack/Daniel pairing, but as much as I love those two together, that's not even a consideration as to why I love this story. Because what it also has is an even stronger undercurrent of friendship, of people coming together to hope and pray for a loved one's recovery. The bulk of the story is a reflection on Daniel's life, of the people who's lives he's touched. It's emotional, it's moving, it has wonderful characterizations, and it gives a peek into a possible alternate future for the SGC, one that I would've loved to have seen happen. Oh, and it contains my all-time favourite Daniel speech.
