Why This Must Be Read: I'm not sure I even know a female version of John Watson existed (hey, medical doctor, name of show... it's a pretty safe assumption), but no knowledge of Elementary is required to enjoy this epistolary exchange between Janet, Joan, Cassie and George. There are multiple time jumps to cover nearly a decade of canon, but it's a delightful exploration of the friendships that surely exist outside the SGC.

I assume that if you are familiar with Joan Watson, you'll enjoy this ever more than I did... but either way, it's definitely a keeper!

I would be delighted to be Cassie’s weird but absurdly trustworthy Aunt Joan, keeper of secrets, buyer of lunches, sender of mildly inappropriate Christmas gifts, purveyor of worldly wisdom, et cetera. I hereby swear that I am neither a Bond villain nor a Bond girl, and that the worst thing your bosses are likely to find in my personal history is the business with the cadaver, the trombone, and the three watermelons, which I assume is already in their files from your background check.

Why This Must Be Read: This is Cassie and mini!Jack, working at a diner, and meeting various crossover characters. That's it, really. And yet there is something about this fic that delights me: Cassie and mini!Jack wholly out of the loop, as they should be. Jack knows who Cassie is, but can't say anything, and has no knowledge of events ~~like Janet's death~~ that take place after he leaves the SGC; Cassie herself has no idea that "Jon" might be someone else, as his existence isn't something that would qualify for "need to know."

I personally recognized one crossover but not the other, and it didn't matter in the slightest. It's just fun to see them interacting with one another, when we know so much more than they do and we can understand so much that they can't!

Is this the future I envision for these two? Probably not. But they're both happy, and I don't see what else we could want for Cassie and mini!Jack.

Why This Must Be Read: First published back in 2000, this is one of the first friendship / family fics I found, way back then, to do with Cassandra ... and it's the only one I'd found that addressed the question of just what to do with an alien child who has lost her entire family, suffered trauma, and been stranded on a strange world. All of SG-1 plus Janet and Hammond are represented, each striving to find the best solution. Most of all, I love that this story explores that question not only from the point of view of the adults, but also lets us hear - in a poignant, touching scene - from Cassandra herself. This is a truly lovely story.

Why This Must Be Read: I adore Cassie and Teal'c friendship fics: the two aliens who have found a place on Earth, but still sometimes feel very much like outsiders. Teal'c offering consolation to Cassie, just after Heroes, is absolutely perfect.

The fic is labeled as "hints at Sam/Jack." This gen girl read it and wondered, "What hints?" So this works with whatever goggles you use. :)

He was her anchor, her alien uncle who reminded her that no matter how truly alien she may feel among the Tauri at times, this was exactly where she belonged.

Why This Must Be Read: A prequel to my previous rec in this category, "Come Fly With Me". Sam gets asked out for dancing by a handsome Captain, but it's not the kind of dancing everyone thinks... Sam is amazing and does a lot of thinking about Jack. Jack is wistful about missing out on the 'dancing'. In all, this is one of those fics that is simply a lovely, sweet read with little peeks into the characters' hearts

Why This Must Be Read: I always love stories that feature Teal'c and Cassie, two aliens who have made their home on Earth, and their unique perspective and connection. This wonderful new and shiny story has an unexpected twist, as it is Cassie who ends up offering Teal'c advice and counsel.

Wonderful Teal'c perspective, lots of lovely little touches, and an unfolding backstory all add up to a very good read. Go feed the new author in the hope we'll get more such fic!
