Why This Must Be Read:

Kaylee have been captured by Reavers and barely surviving on their ship. Circumstances are extremely grim. Until one day a new, strange prisoner arrives...

What happens to Kaylee and Rodney is horrific, and it's written from the POV of a Kaylee who has been bludgeoned into becoming matter-of-fact and almost affectless about the horror, though bits of her canon personality still peek through. The way she and Rodney end up escaping the Reavers is a nice ironic twist. (Don't feed Wraith to those who know what they are.) A short but haunting story, which, despite the warnings and grimness, ends on a note of real, sweet hope. It has a sequel that, although it deals with PTSD, offers a happy ending.

Why this must be read: Great characterization of the ones from SGA. Also, the story is believable based on the storylines from the show. It has great storyline, humor, and exchange between the characters.

The summary of the story is great:

John enjoys the moments when there is a fire crackling in the hearth and the smell of wool and leather and beer in their house grows stronger than the smell of food, with the warm strength of Ronon's hand at the back of his neck keeping him close. A slave is not meant to be pampered like this, but Ronon doesn't care. He interrupts the meetings he has with the other Satedans and the leaders of the Pegasus galaxy to make sure John is comfortable and doesn't fall asleep on the cold floor, and he treats John as if he is something precious and valuable, not just a slave.

Why this must be read: The fanfiction is short and sweet. It is about Ronon Dex wanting to court Rodney McKay by following the rules of Sateda. It is so cute how Ronon goes about it. It is a great, silly fanfiction that really shows the character strengths of Rodney McKay and Ronon Dex.

Why This Must Be Read: There are massive helpings of hurt and comfort all around in this dark but ultimately hopeful story. The SGA team are taken as prisoners of war in an offworld conflict and thrown into a forced labor camp. Despite starvation, beatings and other abuse, they lean on each other and protect each other in order to survive. But getting through their ordeal is only the beginning -- it's going to be a long road back to (relative) normalcy for all of them.

I think this story might be too much for my fragile heart to take if it were longer, but it's only about 23K words, mostly concerned with their recovery. It's been a couple of years since I read it for the first time, but I keep coming back to it for re-reads because it's such a perfect straight-up shot of h/c -- a slightly guilty pleasure, yes, but what really makes the story work for me is the way that, when the characters are stripped down to their bare essentials by their desperate circumstances, what's left is bravery and integrity and love for each other. Despite the darkness of the story, it's a very hopeful story at heart, because no matter what life throws at them and no matter how badly broken they are, the characters still remain fundamentally decent people, still capable of drawing strength from each other. Hopefully you'll enjoy it too.

Why This Must Be Read: I think it's fair to say that SGA is the fandom that finally sold me on AUs.

And this is a good one. The worldbuilding is just fantastic -- a gorgeously original world, with a steampunk feel to it, plus a very organic and believable magic system woven in. Rodney is an alchemist working for the slave-keeping Genii, while hiding secrets of his own. Kolya gives him a "gift": an abused and traumatized, dark-haired, nameless slave who can barely speak.

Given the extremely different circumstances, it's fascinating to see the characters' canon personalities (and relationships) slowly emerge from their AU selves. It's just John and Rodney for the first half of the story, with the rest of the cast showing up later on, though the focus remains on the two of them. The plot is also interesting and holds together well, and it's full of creative and original ideas -- even those that are just dropped in and peripheral to the main story, like Teyla's fascinating-sounding backstory, which reflects her canon backstory with a few magical twists.

Why This Must Be Read:

From the fic: "A world where Abolition had never happened. Where the Confederacy had won the American Civil War and had respected Nazi racial policy so much as to allow the unrestrained takeover of Europe in the 40s. Here Africa was a farm to breed up stock, and children’s textbooks of Biology were prefaced with a ‘Tree of Existence’ showing the White Man (Homo sapiens) at the pinnacle..."

This fic was difficult to read, because...wow. Just, wow. This centers around Rodney and Teyla, stuck along with John and Ronon on "Earth" in an alternate reality in which slavery was never abolished, Nazism flourished, and people of color are enslaved by white men in the modern world. Teyla is forced to live as Rodney's slave while they try to find a way out of this reality and back to Atlantis. It's not a comfortable scenario (see warnings), and it's not really a feel good read, for most of the fic. What it is, is incredibly well written, and extremely powerful. It doesn't just touch on the issues presented by Teyla becoming Rodney's slave, or the state of things within the alternate reality--it pulls up questions about Atlantis, about the dynamic between pretty much *everyone* in regards to race and gender and hell, *everything*. I don't know what to say, really. Here's a snippet.
