Why This Must Be Read: While it's not canon that Jacob Carter was ever MIA, this story is both plausible and marvelously in-character for a six-year-old Sam struggling with her father's absence. Anr does a superb job of giving us a peek into Sam's head, and the final lines tying into canon are heartbreakingly good.

...Yeah, this one isn't that. :)

Why This Must Be Read: I have read this fic at least five times. John is a single parent struggling monetarily to raise a rambunctious, sweet teen who is struggling with mental health issues. Cadman sends him a link to a website where you can sign up to communicate electronically with a "sugar daddy/momma", though the relationship doesn't have to be sexual. Through it, John meets Rodney, and a friendship is formed. It's not a long fic, clocking in at just under 7k, but it's fun and super charming.

Why This Must Be Read: This series will be well known, and this fic’s a favourite of mine. An AU where John’s a cop and he’s Rodney’s hot neighbor. John is divorced, and has intermittent access to his son, so it’s also kidfic - very well handled and realistic. The writing’s engaging and fresh - it carries you along so beware, the story can be hard to put down. There’s plenty of plot, and stagate elements are gradually introduced. And of course the developing friendship between John and Rodney. The second work in the series was abandoned after 4 chapters, but it’s still a good read - and this one’s complete at 20 chapters. Very engaging, and I highly recommend it.

Why This Must Be Read: Here's an exploration of what happened to Charlie the Reetou after he walked through the Stargate with Jacob at the end of Show and Tell. The story skims the surface as a bit, as it's wholly from a child's perspective, but I really liked the in-canon timeline explanations and the frustrations that Charlie experiences as a child with the Tok'ra.

Also, his symbiote is awesome. :)

Why This Must Be Read: Kid Fic tends to be fluffy. I love that about it but...put kid fic and angst together and you can create gold! This series wraps kid fic and angst together so wonderfully. The first installment in the series is wonderfully sweet and angsty, the second installment will break your goddamn heart in two and the third puts it back together in the sweetest way. I love these fics so much, I just reread them with the posting of the third and they were just as amazing the second time around.

Why This Must Be Read: I have a thing for kid fics, I make no bones about it. I generally prefer Rodney as the parent but this is one of two exceptions that prove that rule.

John is a widower, looking after his (very well written and likeable) daughter Kayla. During a trip to the science museum, they meet Dr Rodney McKay and...he basically never leaves their life after that. It's a very sweet set of fics, completely AU, set on Earth, no stargates whatsoever. Both John and Rodney are kept amazingly in character throughout which is always a challenge in AUs. Kayla is a great kid character and avoids the trap of being too perfect. One of my favourite things about this fic is that it shows both John and Rodney as fallible parents and feels very real.

Why This Must Be Read: I've been reccing a few de-aged John stories, and this is the big story about Rodney being accidentally de-aged back to five, and about John caring for him, fiercely protective. It's a big story in every way - satisfyingly long, and dealing with big issues and feelings. There's some angst in Rodney's background, and in how the authorities react, and the underlying sadness for John/Rodney fans that their relationship has to change into that of a parent and child, driven by their bond. It's a great read - highly recommended. There's also a podfic by librarychick_94.

Why This Must Be Read: Quantum mirror time (I like quantum mirror stories, oh yes). This is a lovely angst-ridden story for Daniel fans especially, as SG-1 find themselves in an alternate universe... in the past, in particular at that moment (which every fan will know, oh yes) of little Daniel's life when his life fell apart. And our Daniel remembers it all too well to just turn around and leave him, thus setting up changes and complications that cannot easily (and maybe can't at all) be undone...

A well-written little Daniel, traumatised and in pain but still intelligent and so very him, lots of wrenching suffering both physical and emotional for both Daniels, heaps of team support and empathy, Jack's all too well known bond for children made even more so by who the child is... and out of it all a happy ending in at least one universe. What's not to love?

Why This Must Be Read:Kidfic has a reputation for fluffiness and cuteness, and in many storiess it's deserved (and yes, it's a guilty pleasure of mine, even with the cute). This story, however, is anything but fluffy. It's harrowing, and I love it.

Daniel goes through both de-aging and a twisted Groundhog Day variation (endless repeated of the same four hours and anyone who has seen The Gamekeeper can guess which ones) as a punishment by the usual Aliens With Inscrutable Motives, but this time we are not expected to accept (unlike in a daunting number of AliensWithInscrutableMotives stories) that they have good reasons for what they did. Jack O'Neill certainly doesn't, and - given how cruel what they have done to little Daniel is - he's on the sort of warpath he's so good at.

Definitely recommended for people who like Daniel whumping, kidfic, teaminess and Jack going serious dark side to protect his own.

Why This Must Be Read: Evan Lorne is a soldier, and he has feelings. The first time I read this, I felt awful for him, for being having the man he called CO taken from him. And I fully supported his burning determination to help John not be afraid of being a soldier when he got older. This is part of a series, in which John Sheppard is de-aged, and I highly recommend the entire series, but this brief and powerful insight into just Evan is a good place to stop by.

This is an amazing story and an amazing series of stories about a John who never when to Antarctica and a Rodney who never went to Atantis, but still found each other. Their story and love is epic.

Why This Must Be Read: This is an excellent representation of the team as children, spending one year together in Virginia. Rodney’s the new guy, his family just moved from Canada, and I love the easy way the others accept him as one of their own.

They best part, though, are the stories John tells about a sunken city, and Wraith in the woods, and the crumbling tunnel he calls a Stargate. They all follow John’s lead, believing in things they can’t see, and this comes to a very satisfying resolution in the epilogue. This fic is wonderful in the way it captures the magic of childhood, despite a lot of real-world family problems, and makes sure that these characters never lose that feeling even as adults.

Why This Must Be Read:I love kidfic. I especially love Little Daniel fic with Jack doing the caregiving thing. This is a favorite of mine because it contains both those things as well as a goodly helping of angst and bonding between Jack and his new charge. There's some soul-searching on Jack's part in this, which I could feel was exactly how Jack would feel about circumstances like this, some humor with some typical Jack and Daniel banter, and the eventual bond between Jack and this little Daniel is heartwarming.

Why This Must Be Read: Aaah, the good ol' Quantum Mirror... I'm a sucker for a good Quantum Mirror fic. Well okay, this isn't quite a Quantum Mirror fic: it's a Quantum-Mirror-esque-device-with-a-twist fic. A twist the team doesn't realize until they're on the other side: a time travel function. Oops. And so they arrive at Met in 1972.
This story is a unique look at an old SG1 troupe with an interesting plot that's both emotionally charged and with a clever resolution. And the epilogue is a perfect ending that leaves you with a tearful smile.
