Why This Must Be Read: A triptych of Jacob Carter snapshots, at various points in his life, and the nature of time wasted and saved. Thoughtful and personable at the same time!

Jacob thinks about days measured by doctor’s appointments, by military operations, by phone calls that change your life, and then about great mysteries locked in mountains that seem to defy time and the progress of ‘normal’ life entirely. He smiles.

Why This Must Be Read: At the beginning of Death Knell, Sam is astonished to learn that Jacob gave up coffee for his symbiote. This little missing scene offers a possible scenario for how that might have happened, with some fun give-and-take between Jacob and Selmak.

As an unabashed coffee addict, he'd been vaguely surprised when he didn't suffer any withdrawal symptoms in his first days offworld. Still, he supposed that a symbiote capable of curing cancer and fixing arthritic knees would have little trouble tweaking his serotonin levels and adjusting his neurotransmitters to avoid caffeine-induced crankiness.

Why This Must Be Read: Here is a light-hearted snippet of Jacob, gamely adjusting to life as a Tok'ra, and dealing with some of the more... unexpected aspects of going undercover in Zipacna's court.

As Marzipan noted earlier this month, the loss of Carmen Argenziano makes Jacob recs particularly fitting right now. So here's one in memory of the man who brought Jacob Carter so vividly to life that you'll easily hear him saying, "You've got to be kidding me!"

As a species, Jacob found that even male Tok’ra had pretty strange taste in wardrobes.

Why This Must Be Read: In honor of the passing of the brilliant Carmen Argenziano. This is one little scene, a scene we'd all have loved to see where Jacob pitches a Air-Force-General-Sized fit at the Tok'ra Council and calls them on their bullshit idea of backing up their people. There's cursing, there's juvenile name calling, there's table pounding. I'm on the look-out for more Jacob fic to rec this month because, boy would I have loved to see more of him and I'm gutted that he's passed on.

snippet

"~A Tau'ri in full rage is certainly a sight to see,~ mused Selmac. ~Such fire, such spirit. It would do our people good to get more of them.~ Not that she didn't love all of her previous hosts, each in their own way, but here was a warrior! Here was the strength, the power, the passion, the sheer unmitigated gall that led a technologically inferior race of primitives to destroy 5 system lords in as many years."

Why This Must Be Read: Here's an exploration of what happened to Charlie the Reetou after he walked through the Stargate with Jacob at the end of Show and Tell. The story skims the surface as a bit, as it's wholly from a child's perspective, but I really liked the in-canon timeline explanations and the frustrations that Charlie experiences as a child with the Tok'ra.

Also, his symbiote is awesome. :)

Why This Must Be Read: Over the years SG-1 has encountered hundreds of interesting people and I just love it when an author remembers one of those characters and utilizes them in a story. In this one, it's Aris Boch the intrepid bounty hunter. Oops, sorry, former intrepid bounty hunter. There is another, brief, cameo but I'll leave their identity to be a surprise. The heart of the story, however, is most definitely Daniel. And it's my favourite kind of Daniel: the one who's determined to do whatever he can to help save innocent lives no matter the potential cost to himself. Even when it means keeping secrets from his team and potentially alienating Jack for good. The premise of the story is rather intriguing and, while the Goa'uld responsible never actually makes an appearance, his 'servant' more than makes up for that.

Author's summary: Daniel goes undercover to diffuse a deadly situation on a benign planet.

Link: Holding My Breath

Why This Must Be Read: This story is an expansion of the season 5 episodes "The Summit" and "The Last Stand", where Daniel goes undercover as Yu's Lo'taur. Marzipan77 brilliantly weaves the story within the existing episode, creating what feels like the episode itself could've been if not for television time restrictions. Marzipan77 shows the politics at the Goa'uld's courts in a way that the episode only hinted at along with a longer, deeper look at the cruelty of the System Lords on a more personal level. But most importantly, the story highlights Daniel's emotions throughout his entire ordeal and explains some of his actions, revelations and decisions. This is a really well-written story (there's a sequel too) and I can't believe it hasn't been recced here yet.

Author's summary: Season 5 Daniel begins to disappear from team interactions leading to feelings of failure. During "Summit" and "Last Stand," why did SG-1 stand by quietly while he went off alone on such a dangerous mission? Why didn't they care? Why didn't he?

Why This Must Be Read: It's 90% (or more) gen, but there are some sweet Sam/(Jolinar)/Martouf/Lantash scenes, which is why I am reccing it for this category. I love apocafic, and this is a wonderful, long one. Our heroes from the SGC have to flee from Earth when Apophis attacks and conquers Earth. The story has some wonderful world building, and some wonderful scenes where the now homeless Tau'ri try to make their homes on various bases, always on the run. The scenes from Earth, where we follow Mark and his family, now subjects of Apophis, are a nice way of showing what happens there.
Very different, very dark, but there are glimmers of hope here and there.

Why this should be read: A look at the Goa'uld (well 2 Goa'uld and 1 Tok'ra) and their personality - and things are not as black and white as it is often shown in Stargate. Even the worst may show hints that they could once have been redeemed, had things turned out differently, and it is difficult to not feel a little even for Qetesh. These three ficlets are a different and fascinating study of the Goa'uld, and the complexities that (of course) exist within them. Go read it. It's one of the best stories I have read in a while.

Why This Must Be Read: Nightspear concludes one of my all-time favorite AUs with the fifth in the series, Journeys, covering the events in her Daniel of Abydos universe from mid-S5 through mid-S7.

Daniel of Abydos originally began as a kind of kidfic (and nonetheless made me fell in love with it!), but by the time this final novel begins, Daniel is already an adult and a full-fledged member of SG-1. Still, his relative youth and the changes in this Au's backstory means that Revanna, Kelowna, Abyss, Changeling, Full Circle, Orpheus, and other canon incidents happen very differently, with a fascinating exploration of the challenges of Ascension and the limitations and rules that Daniel has to face. ("Tell Jacob to stop" will break your heart, trust me.) Some die who lived in canon; others live who died.

I love Nyan's brave attempt to take Daniel's place on SG-1, and the twist of Jonas earning his position partially by virtue of being untainted by guilt. I love the way Nightspear wove the mythology of the later seasons into Daniel's version of S6 and made it work. I love her Abydos and its people, and the courage and determination they continue to show. But most of all, I enjoy Nightspear's loving attention to detail, her craft at characterization, and the wonderful way she depicts these characters who are just a little different from the SG-1 we know and love, but are delightfully, perfectly themselves.

Why This Must Be Read: This is one of the most original fics I have read. The story runs cocurrently with Window Of Oppertunity, but it concerns those who were outside of the time loop. Those off world teams, those at the alpha site, and Jacob Carter are all unsuccesfully at not only contacting earth, but even finding it. All they can do is assume the worst.
